For a FedEx Freight shipment, Parcello creates the bill of lading (BOL) on your FedEx Freight account, and books the truck to pick it up. This article walks through one shipment from freight details to pickup.

Before you start

  • FedEx Freight is connected, with BOL billing filled in when FedEx Freight bills another account. See Freight with FedEx Freight.
  • The shipment’s carrier is FedEx Freight, and both the ship-from and ship-to addresses are in the United States.
  • The ship-from location has a street address and a phone number on the Locations page, and the ship-to address has a street address.

1. Fill in Freight details

Open the order and expand Freight details on the FedEx Freight shipment. Changes save as you make them: choices right away, text when you leave the field. The line next to the heading shows “Saving…” while a change saves, and “Not saved” with Retry if it fails.

FieldWhat it does
Destination typeBusiness by default, or Residential for a home delivery.
Delivery accessorialsLiftgate at delivery, Inside delivery, Limited-access delivery and Call before delivery (appointment). All start off.
BOL special instructionsPrefilled from the Freight card on Carriers. Printed on the BOL. Clear it for no instructions on this BOL. Up to 500 characters.
Pickup ready from / Pickup ready toDefaults to the window on the Freight card (2:00 PM to 4:00 PM unless you changed it). Printed on the BOL and used for the pickup.
Delivery ready from / Delivery ready toOptional. Printed on the BOL.

There’s no coverage checkbox. Parcello sends no declared value to FedEx Freight, so FedEx Freight’s standard liability applies.

The destination type and the accessorials change the price, so changing them clears the quote. Instructions and time windows print on the BOL and keep the quote. Home or business comes from the destination type, for the quote and the BOL alike.

If you switch a shipment between Estes and FedEx Freight, choices the new carrier doesn’t offer aren’t sent. A delivery location only Estes offers, such as Trade show / Exhibition, reads as Business.

The shipment’s Ship date is the pickup date printed on the BOL. It defaults to your next pickup day: today if it’s before your shipping cutoff on a shipping day, otherwise the next shipping day. The cutoff and shipping days come from the Checkout Rates page; without them, Monday to Friday with federal holidays off and no cutoff. You can pick a date up to 7 days ahead. Changing it clears the quote.

2. Get Freight Rates

Click Get Freight Rates, then pick FedEx Freight® Priority or FedEx Freight® Economy. A new FedEx Freight shipment starts on the service the customer paid for at checkout, otherwise on FedEx Freight Economy. Prices are your account’s FedEx Freight rates when FedEx Freight returns them, and its list rates otherwise.

FedEx Freight doesn’t validate addresses, so the address is used as entered: “FedEx Freight doesn’t offer address validation. The address is used as entered.”

3. Review and create the BOL

Click Create BOL. A Review the Bill of Lading window shows what FedEx Freight will receive:

LineWhat it shows
PickupDate and ready window
Delivery windowOnly when you set one
ServiceService, price and FedEx Freight quote number
DeliveryDestination type and accessorials
Coverage“FedEx Freight’s standard liability”
Special instructionsYour instructions for this BOL

Below it, a table lists every box: Box, Description, Weight (to two decimals), Class and Dimensions (longest side first).

Click Create BOL to confirm. The button stays disabled while a change is saving or a quote is missing. FedEx Freight assigns the PRO number (it becomes the shipment’s tracking number) and returns:

  • the bill of lading: Download Bill of Lading in the shipment’s documents,
  • a 4 × 6 shipping label that names the shipment’s handling units: Download Shipping Labels gives one copy per box, so each box carries one.

Creating a BOL doesn’t book a pickup. Freight details are locked until you void the BOL.

What the BOL carries

  • The order name, without the #, as the BOL number and the shipper number.
  • Your special instructions, then the pickup window (“Ready from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM”) and any delivery window, joined in the BOL’s special instructions. FedEx Freight gets the first 500 characters.
  • One line per box, with a description of up to 35 characters: the BOL description of the product’s box row on Products, otherwise the product titles, cut at a whole word. See BOL descriptions.
  • The ship-from location’s phone number and contact email (your store email when the location has none).

4. Book the pickup

After the BOL exists, the shipment shows a Pickup date (your next pickup day) and Schedule Pickup. Parcello books a FedEx Freight pickup at the ship-from location with the pickup ready window from Freight details. The shipment then shows “Pickup scheduled” with the confirmation number and Cancel Pickup.

Several BOLs, one pickup

One pickup can collect several BOLs at a location, going to different customers. On the Orders page, the Pickups card has a row for each freight carrier and location with BOLs waiting, marked FedEx Freight for FedEx Freight BOLs. Set the Pickup date (up to 14 days ahead), Ready from and Ready to, and click Schedule pickup. The booking covers every FedEx Freight BOL waiting at that location.

A booked stop shows the date, window, confirmation number, how many shipments and handling units it covers, and the weight. Cancel pickup releases all of its BOLs, which then wait for a new booking.

A shipment booked from the card shows “Booked with other shipments. Manage it under Pickups on the Orders page.” You can’t cancel that stop from the order.

5. Void a BOL

Click Void BOL and confirm. FedEx Freight offers no way to cancel a bill of lading from Parcello, so voiding clears it in Parcello and:

  • cancels the shipment’s own pickup, or
  • takes the shipment off a stop booked from the Pickups card (the stop stays booked for the others).

If you arranged a pickup outside Parcello, cancel it on fedexfreight.com so the driver doesn’t show up.

When the pickup can’t be cancelled, the BOL isn’t voided: “Could not cancel the scheduled FedEx Freight pickup (<reason>). Cancel it on fedexfreight.com, then void again.”

Emails

FedEx Freight shipments have no Notifications section. Parcello doesn’t ask FedEx Freight to send shipment emails.
