Check, correct and edit shipping addresses

How Parcello checks the ship-to address with the carrier, what to do with a suggested address, and how to edit the address that goes on the label.

Updated October 22, 2026

Before you buy a label, Parcello asks the shipment’s carrier to check the ship-to address. The carrier can confirm it, suggest a correction, or say it can’t find it. You decide what goes on the label.

The two addresses on a shipment

Open a shipment under Shipments on the order page. It shows two boxes side by side:

BoxWhat it is
Order AddressThe shipping address from the Shopify order, and the order’s note. Read-only
Label AddressThe address that goes on the label. Starts as the order address and changes when you take a carrier suggestion or edit it

A badge next to Label Address shows where the check stands:

BadgeMeaning
PendingNot checked yet, or a suggestion is waiting for your choice
ValidatedThe carrier confirmed the address, or you took its suggestion
Validation FailedThe carrier couldn’t verify the address
OverriddenYou kept your address over the carrier’s suggestion, you edited it, or the carrier doesn’t check addresses for that destination

Labels can be created when the badge reads Validated or Overridden.

The order note

When the Shopify order has a note (the customer’s note at checkout, or one your staff added in Shopify), it shows under Notes at the bottom of the Order Address box, as written. A May affect delivery badge marks notes that mention things like an appointment, calling ahead, a liftgate, a loading dock or delivery hours. Parcello doesn’t act on the note: add what the carrier needs yourself, for example in Freight details on a freight shipment.

The note follows the Shopify order: when it’s edited or removed in Shopify, the order page shows the change. Orders imported before this change (October 22, 2026) show their note once the order changes in Shopify, or after you click Sync Orders on the Orders page, which reaches about the last 60 days.

Check the address

  1. Choose the carrier and service. See Rates and services on the order.
  2. Click Validate Address & Get Rates. (Estes and FedEx Freight shipments show Get Freight Rates: they don’t check addresses.)

Parcello checks the address and gets rates in one step. What you see next depends on the carrier’s answer:

  • Same address. The badge turns Validated. If the carrier only wrote it differently (for example “Avenue” as “AVE”, or a ZIP+4 code), the label uses the carrier’s version without asking.
  • A different address. The Address Validation dialog opens with Your Address: next to the carrier’s suggestion. Click Use Suggested Address or Keep Original Address. When the carrier finds several matches, click Use This on the right one.
  • Not found. The badge turns Validation Failed and a red banner shows the carrier’s reason. Fix the address with Edit (below).
  • No answer. A banner reads, for example, “UPS didn’t answer the address check. Get rates again.” Nothing changes on the shipment.

Parcello gets new rates right after you choose an address, so the prices match the address on the label.

On the batch page

When you get rates for a batch (Operations plan), a waiting suggestion shows on the shipment’s row with Use suggested and Keep mine. Use suggested isn’t offered when the suggestion would drop part of the street, such as a unit number. Open the order to review those. See Ship many orders in a batch.

Home or business

When the carrier says whether the address is a home or a business, the Label Address box shows Home address, per the carrier or Business address, per the carrier. Parcello rates and labels the shipment with that answer, whether you take the carrier’s suggestion or keep your own address. Carriers price home deliveries differently, so this keeps the quote and the label in line.

Where addresses are checked

CarrierChecks
UPSUS and Puerto Rico addresses. Other countries are used as entered, with the note “UPS validates U.S. and Puerto Rico addresses only. The address will be used as entered.”
FedExAddresses are checked with FedEx
ShippoUS addresses. Other countries are used as entered
EstesNo check. The address is used as entered on the bill of lading
FedEx FreightNo check. The address is used as entered on the bill of lading

An address used as entered is marked Overridden, so it doesn’t block your labels.

Edit the label address

  1. Click Edit in the Label Address box.
  2. Change any of First Name, Last Name, Company, Address Line 1, Address Line 2, City, State/Province, ZIP/Postal Code, Country and Phone.
  3. Click Done.

Parcello saves the address only if you changed something. The badge turns Overridden and Parcello gets new rates for the new address. If you only changed the name or the phone number, the rates you already have are kept.

Editing changes the label only. The order in Shopify keeps its address.

The Country list offers the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, Japan and China. To ship to another country, change the shipping address on the order in Shopify instead.

Once the shipment has labels, the Edit link disappears. Void the labels to change the address.

What every label address needs

Parcello checks these fields before it asks the carrier for a label:

FieldRule
NameA first name, last name or company
Address Line 1Required
CityRequired
State/ProvinceRequired for the United States and Canada
ZIP/Postal CodeRequired
CountryRequired
PhoneAt least 10 digits, using only digits, +, -, (, ) and spaces

When the order’s address changes in Shopify

If the customer or your team changes the shipping address on the order in Shopify, Parcello updates the shipments that were going to the old address and have no label (never labeled, or labels voided). Their check goes back to Pending and their rates are cleared, so you check and rate the new address before buying a label.

These shipments keep their own address:

  • shipments with a label,
  • shipments whose label address you edited to point somewhere else,
  • recipients added with Ship to multiple recipients (see Ship one order to many recipients),
  • return shipments.

Switching a shipment to another carrier also sends the check back to Pending, so the new carrier can check the address. An address you edited is kept for that check.

Troubleshooting

“Address must be validated before creating labels. Click ‘Validate Address & Get Rates’ first.” The badge reads Pending or Validation Failed. Run the check. If it fails, correct the address with Edit.

“Address not validated. You can still create labels, but consider validating first.” This warning shows on a shipment whose address is Pending or Validation Failed. Despite its wording, Create Labels is refused until the badge reads Validated or Overridden: run the check, or correct the address with Edit.

“Address validated by carrier, but missing required shipping fields: …” The carrier found the address, but a field from the table above is missing, often the phone number. Add it with Edit.

“Cannot create labels: Missing required shipping fields: …” Same cause, found when creating labels. Add the missing fields with Edit.

“The shipping address changed while it was being checked. Get rates again.” or “The shipping address changed. Get rates again to check it.” The order’s address changed in Shopify while you were working. Click Validate Address & Get Rates again.
